The University has a range of funding opportunities available for international students.

You can study in University of Surrey on fully funded scholarship depending on your eligiblity

This is a 4 years Course with professional training placement.

Home to superb research facilities and partnered with the National Physical Laboratory, Surrey offers distinctive physics courses that are among the best in the UK and reflect the diversity and exciting nature of the subject.

Our BSc and MPhys Physics courses offer you a flexible choice of modules across many different topics, covering both theoretical and applied areas of physics. Our teaching builds on the broad range of expertise among the academics in Surrey’s Department of Physics.

A unique aspect of both courses is our placement programme:

As part of our BSc course, you can take up a paid year-long placement in an industry research laboratory or company, gaining valuable industry-relevant experience as part of your degree

On our MPhys course you will take up a year-long research placement that can be in one of our world-leading research groups, or at one of our partner institutions all over the world.

What you will study

On our BSc and MPhys Physics courses, you’ll study both core topics (for example, particle, nuclear and atomic physics) and optional modules. During your first year, you can switch between any of our specialist physics courses.

The option to take an integrated research year or Professional Training placement will also give you invaluable hands-on experience to enhance your employability.

You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MPhys (Master of Physics), a direct route to a masters qualification. Studying for an MPhys, you’ll spend a year doing research before returning for a final year of masters-level modules.

Depending on your progress, you may have the option to switch to a BSc or MPhys during your studies. Find out more about the benefits of an integrated masters degree.

Careers and graduate prospects

We offer careers information, advice and guidance to all students whilst studying with us, which is extended to our alumni for three years after leaving the University.

Physicists are highly sought after in industry, research, education, management, medicine, law and business because of their broad practical and numeracy skills, coupled with advanced scientific knowledge.

With optional modules such as Nuclear Astrophysics, Soft Matter and Biological Physics and Cosmology and Galaxy Formation, our courses will provide you with the analytical, experimental and computational skills valued in a wide variety of careers.

As a Surrey physics student, you’ll learn a range of employability skills during your studies. You will take a dedicated Year 1 module – Scientific Investigation Skills – which covers key communication skills, group work and presentations, and problem-solving in the laboratory. We will support you with building your CV, interview preparation and job applications.

Students who take either the Professional Training Year or Research Year placements also gain invaluable employment experience at their host institution.

After graduating, you may decide to become a professional scientist, but physics opens many other doors too. Your skills will be valued by a wide range of employers in areas such as journalism, law, IT, education and finance. Recent graduates are now employed in roles such as:

Senior Development Engineer, Fourth State Medicine Ltd

Research Scientist RF and Microwave Metrologist, National Physical Laboratory

System Analyst, Raytheon Systems Ltd

Automation Tester, CGI

Graduate Physicist, DSTL

Graduate Engineer, Aktins

Trainee Clinical Scientist, NHS.

Many of our graduates also go on to take masters courses in a range of subjects such as geophysics, nanotechnology, meteorology, quantum field theory, education management and science communication. Others, particularly those with an MPhys degree, choose to pursue PhDs in astrophysics, materials science, nuclear physics and semiconductors and photonics, amongst others.

The University of Surrey is a public research university in Guildford, England. The university received its royal charter in 1966, along with a number of other institutions following recommendations in the Robbins Report. The University of Surrey began as the Battersea Polytechnic Institute founded in 1891 under the City of London Parochial Charities Act (1883) scheme to establish Polytechnic Institutes throughout London. The university's research output and global partnerships have led to it being regarded as one of the UK's leading research universities.

Surrey is a member of the Association of MBAs and is one of four universities in the University Global Partnership Network. Surrey is also part of the SETsquared partnership along with the University of Bath, the University of Bristol, the University of Southampton and the University of Exeter. A major centre for satellite and mobile communications research, Surrey is in partnership with King's College London and the University of Dresden to develop 5G technology worldwide. It also holds a number of formal links with institutions worldwide, including the Surrey International Institute, launched in partnership with the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics. Surrey has been awarded three Queen's Anniversary Prizes for its research, with the 2014 Research Excellence Framework ranking 78% of the university's research outputs as "world leading" or "internationally excellent".

The university's main campus is on Stag Hill, close to the centre of Guildford and adjacent to Guildford Cathedral.
