(e.g. 1st class honours degree holders, A Grade students, GPA 3.5+/4) will automatically be considered for a Merit Scholarship worth £4,000 per year.

As well as learning the fundamentals of computer science and advanced programming skills, you will benefit from teaching that relates to the research interest of the academic staff. Particular specialities available during the course include computer graphics, artificial intelligence and agents and data communications. If these areas appeal to you then this is the Computer Science course for you.

The University wants to help you become a computer professional with the ability to keep yourself up-to-date with the rapid pace of developments in the field of computer science. After graduation with one of our computing degrees you should be able to obtain a good job in the computing industry in the UK or indeed with any of the international computing firms; or take up study for a higher degree such as a Masters Degree or PhD (both offered at Bangor).

The University offers a lively community with well-equipped laboratories, networked computers using industry-standard software and its own library.
Research and other interactions with industry ensure that our courses reflect recent developments. Staff are practising professionals, who work on joint projects and act as consultants to industry.
Final-year projects are often carried out in collaboration with a local company - providing you with advantages when seeking employment.
This degree is validated by the British Computer Society which is the Chartered Institute for IT.
We have recently installed a large networking laboratory – designed to provide the opportunity to design and administer networks and to support the delivery of computer architecture modules.

During the course you will spend about 12 hours in lectures and 8 in laboratories each week. You will also have tutorials in some modules and have to work on software design and complete various problem-solving assignments. There will be an opportunity to undertake major software projects which will allow you to develop your creative design and technical skills as well as apply the theoretical principles you have learned.

Modules on this course are assessed by examinations, continuous assessment or a combination of both. The continuous assessment can include some supervised practical element or independent study, followed by report writing. Your module results and individual project marks contribute to your degree final grade.


Graduates in Computer Science will have career opportunities anywhere that computers are used by businesses and the public-sector. From working as application developers to managing the IT and communications services for companies, to computer games, there are plenty of opportunities. In addition to the main stream careers for our graduates, their mathematical modelling ability combined with problem-solving and project management skills makes them attractive to a much wider range of employers.

Graduates in Computer Systems with Business Studies and allied courses are well-placed to work in modern businesses, where their skills can be put to use in the growing e-commerce arena.

Many of our graduates go on to further study: taught postgraduate courses such as the MSc degree, or research degrees such as the MPhil or PhD. Wherever there is a need for people who can use their knowledge of science and engineering to solve problems, our graduates will be ready to make a valuable contribution.

Founded in 1884, Bangor University has a long tradition of academic excellence and a strong focus on the student experience. Around 10,000 students currently study at the University, with teaching staff based within fourteen Academic Schools.

The University was founded as a direct result of a campaign in the late nineteenth century for higher education provision in Wales. Funds were raised by public subscription to establish a college of university rank in Bangor. An important feature of its foundation was the voluntary contributions made by local people, including farmers and quarrymen, from their weekly wages over a period of time.

Bangor University is ranked in the top 40 in the UK for research*, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The REF recognised that more than three-quarters of Bangor’s research is either world-leading or internationally excellent, ahead of the average for UK universities.

Student life at Bangor University is vibrant and diverse. Student membership is free, so all our students can take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities offered. Our Clubs and Societies were named best in the UK at the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2019.

Students are given help and support from the moment they arrive. Our Student Services Centreprovides advice and guidance on matters from money and housing to disability support, counselling, dyslexia, study skills and local faith provision. Every year hundreds of second and third year students are trained as Peer Guides to welcome new students to Bangor and provide practical advice to help them settle-in.

The University was originally based in an old coaching inn called the Penrhyn Arms. In 1903, the city of Bangor donated a 10-acre site overlooking the city at Penrallt for a new building, and substantial sums of money were raised by local people to help meet the cost. The foundation stone for this was laid in 1907, and four years later in 1911 the main building was opened, together with some arts and social science buildings and part of the Library.

The Science Departments remained in the Penrhyn Arms for another fifteen years. In 1926 they moved to new purpose-built accommodation which had been constructed with the assistance of funds raised by the North Wales Heroes Memorial.

Today, The University has over 11,000 students and 2,000 members of staff. Bangor University is committed to providing teaching of the highest quality, conducting research of the highest quality, taking good care of its students and playing a full role in the wider community of Wales .
