The 24–month blended model of the BA in Professional Communication program has been developed to meet the needs of students who wish to continue their employment, while completing their third and fourth years of a bachelor's degree. The blended program is delivered through online learning and on-campus residencies, a two-week on-campus residency at the beginning of each year (with the rest of the program delivered online). The program starts from 3rd year.
PRE-RESIDENCY (ONLINE)
Preceding the residency, there is a four-week period where students can become familiar with textbooks, fellow students, faculty and our online learning platform, Moodle. Students can expect to spend about 15-20 hours of work each week for their pre-residency, with an increase in workload for the second pre-residency.
RESIDENCY
The blended BA in Professional Communication program has two, two-week residencies at the beginning of each academic year. Residencies are periods of intense study that enables students to become acquainted with RRU’s culture, faculty, and fellow students. Students also:
-
Begin the study of core elements of the program.
-
Attend computer lab courses in information and communication technology.
-
Develop team and leadership skills essential for future distance-delivered courses.
-
Consolidate learning acquired during the program.
-
Benefit from small-group mentoring and personal consultation.
During residency students can expect to work hard, with the schedule usually being Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m with team meetings, readings and assignments completed done outside of these hours.
POST-RESIDENCY (ONLINE)
Following each residency, there is a two-week period in which students expand upon the practical introduction and practice skills while increasing their knowledge base.
ONLINE LEARNING
Subsequent distance courses deliver much of the theoretical and information-based material in the program. Typically, during the distance portions, students are working on one or two distance courses at a time, for a period of approximately 10 weeks. Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 12-15 hours per week, with a total commitment of approximately 24 - 30 hours per week when two courses are running simultaneously.
During the first distance courses, the amount of time required may be higher, as students familiarize themselves with our distance learning technologies and learn to balance work, school, and life.
