This program can studied for either 3 years with a Bachelor degree or 4 Years (Sandwich) with an Hons degree. The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree provides a strong theoretical and practical foundation for those looking to open the door to one of the many career opportunities available to mechanical engineers. With project-based learning throughout, you’ll develop transferable skills and the multidisciplinary awareness that are highly valued in industry.

In your first year, you’ll get a grounding in the fundamental principles of applied mathematics and engineering sciences. What’s more, you’ll also get straight into the practical side of things, with a design-and-build challenge.

You'll develop scientific and analytical skills as you study specialisms like solid and fluid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics and engineering mathematics. And with project work that’s rooted in our research and shaped around industry, you’ll learn how to apply those skills to real-world engineering.

This Mechanical Engineering degree is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

This course is also available with a Foundation Year.

First year

Your first year begins with two weeks of interactive, hands-on practical induction to give you the opportunity to get to know your fellow students and the academic and technical staff who will support your studies. You will work on a series of mini challenges that will include activities in our specialist laboratories and workshops. After induction, we will provide a range of classes and structured self-study activities to develop your knowledge of the course fundamentals and to practice the key technical and study skills that you will need for your future success.

Second year

You start the second year with an internationally themed group project, working with students from your own and other courses, to give you a flavour of what it is like to work on a multi-disciplinary engineering team. We will encourage you to develop your career plan and to apply for a sandwich placement year. The multi-disciplinary and global theme continues in your project-based activity throughout the year, alongside in depth study of your degree's specialist technical topics. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the work of our research groups, to help you choose an area for your individual, final year project.

Third year

The final year includes a major individual project and study of the latest developments and challenges in your chosen specialist area.

 CAREER PROSPECTS

Mechanical Engineering graduates from Manchester metropolitan university occupy a variety of roles in engineering consultancies, manufacturing, aircraft design and manufacture, automotive and railway engineering, steel manufacturing, naval engineering, water companies, and the power and nuclear fuel industries.

Employers outside of engineering sectors also recognise the skills and problem-solving capacity of the engineering graduate, and there may be opportunities in sales, commissioning, finance, teaching and management, as well as roles managing technology to support a range of organisations.

Today, it is also home to the Manchester School of Art, the Manchester School of Theatre, as well as the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) administered in collaboration with the University of Manchester.

The University's logo is derived from the upper part of the shield of the university crest, with six spade-irons positioned together, suggesting hard toil and entrenchment.

History

Manchester Met was developed from mergers of various colleges with various specialisms, including technology, art and design. Its founding can be traced back to the Manchester Mechanics Institute, and the Manchester School of Design latterly known as the Manchester School of Art. The painter L. S. Lowry attended in the years after the First World War, where he was taught by the noted impressionist Adolphe Valette.

Schools of Commerce (founded 1889), Education (f. 1878), and Domestic Science (f. 1880) were added alongside colleges at Didsbury, Crewe, Alsager and the former Domestic and Trades College (f. 1911). The school renamed itself as Manchester Polytechnic in 1970, which was followed by series of mergers with the Didsbury College of Education and Hollings College in 1977, as well as City of Manchester College of Higher Education in 1983. In 1987, the institution became a founding member of the Northern Consortium, and became a corporate body on 1 April 1989 as allowed by the terms of the Education Reform Act.

On 15 September 1992, Manchester Polytechnic finally gained university status under the wide-sweeping Further and Higher Education Act 1992, and has since rebranded as Manchester Metropolitan University.

After earning university status, Manchester Met absorbed Crewe and Alsager College of Higher Education, and the Manchester School of Physiotherapy (MSOP) in 2004: an institution officially formed in 1991 through the amalgamation of the Manchester Royal Infirmary (M.R.I.) and Withington Hospital Schools of Physiotherapy. MSOP was previously affiliated with the Victoria University of Manchester, which conferred degree-level courses by extension until the final Class of 2005. MSOP joined Manchester Metropolitan University as the Department of Physiotherapy in 2004, and was later renamed as the Department of Health Professions. Today, it offers undergraduate and postgraduate studies, a three-year undergraduate honours programme, and National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) programmes for unqualified support workers in the field of physiotherapy.
