Would you like to stand out in the international job market? Do you already have an undergraduate degree from a university or university of applied sciences? Would you like to earn a British Master’s degree while studying in English in Finland?

HELBUS offers a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) -degree programme, where the degree is awarded by the University of Northampton (UoN), UK. This means that students are enrolled as UoN students and the programme follows closely the specification and policies of UoN. It is fully compliant with UK quality assurance regulations. This British MBA is an official postgraduate (Master’s) degree regulated by the UK educational authority, QAA.

The programme takes 12 months to complete with attendance required in Helsinki 2-3 days a week.

You are eligible to apply to the MBA -programme if you have graduated (or are about to graduate) with an undergraduate degree in business and management. Degree holders of other disciplines may apply, if they can demonstrate a passion and interest in business and management in their motivation letter and CV. As this MBA is designated as ‘pre-experience’, executive-level job experience is not mandatory. Read more about the entry requirements.

The overall purpose of the pre-experience MBA-programme is to develop master’s-level knowledge and skills in business and management subjects and to enhance the utility and employability of the first degree. It aims to prepare individuals for employment in a management role with a sound understanding of business/organisational contexts. Compared to a specialist M.Sc. degree, a MBA is a generalist degree with a broader, more holistic approach.  The following modules are included:

  • Critical Issues in Business

  • Management and Organisational Behaviour

  • Competitive Strategy and Innovation

  • Strategic Marketing

  • Managing Operations and the Supply Chain

  • The Entrepreneurship Report: Financial Decision Making

  • Business Research Project

  • International Business Negotiation

  • Business Research Project (cont)

Overall, the MBA degree consists of 180 UK credits (equivalent to 90 ECTS credits), and takes one calendar year (three terms) to complete. Assessment will mainly be conducted through written assignments such as reports, essays and critical analysis.

The MBA-programme is offered through the full-time study mode with at least 75 % attendance recommended. Workshops are held in intensive periods, normally from Tuesday to Friday.

HELBUS is a private business school in Finland founded by Professor Veikko Jääskeläinen, the former rector of Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration, and Dr. Kari Jääskeläinen. Veikko has founded several BBA- and MBA-programs around the world and it was his experience that led them to found a private business school. Their decision to do so was groundbreaking in Finland, where higher education has been state owned for most of the past century. In fact, Finnish law does not even recognise private universities, but does not explicitly forbid them either. This did not hold back Kari, who does not leave things undone just because they have not been done before.

Veikko Jääskeläinen is the former rector of Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration, today part of Aalto University. During his career in academia he established four BBA- and MBA-programs in Finland, South Korea and Singapore, including the prestigious triple accredited MBA and eMBA programs that are now the crown jewels of Aalto University. “We started the BBA-programme in Mikkeli with just 25 students in the 1980s, taking in basically anyone who applied. Today, there are over 800 applicants each year to Mikkeli,” Veikko notes.

HELBUS has its roots in the early 2000’s, when it operated as an exchange program known as Academy Access, offering semesters abroad in Malaysia. Over 500 students from 40 universities in Europe took part in this program.

During this time, Kari and Veikko observed that an increasing number of students applying for study places in Finnish state business schools could not pass the competitive entrance exams, with just 7-10 % succeeding on average. They wanted to offer an alternative for these gifted and motivated applicants. The years of experience in Malaysia had helped build a strong network in Asia, and Kari believes that HELBUS’ practice of inviting international instructors to deliver modules differentiates it from other universities. Combined with a relatively small class size, HELBUS instructors and staff can offer guidance at an individual level when needed.

HELBUS received accreditation from the largest accrediting organisation in the UK, Pearson in August 2013, after less than a year of operations. In fall 2016, the University of Northampton, UK, approved HELBUS as an institutional partner to deliver degree programmes validated by the University. HELBUS now delivers both an undergraduate and postgraduate degree programme in business and management with degrees awarded by the University of Northampton.
