This BSc Physics with Quantum Technologies courses will teach you about the quantum world, opening the door to a wealth of opportunities in both industry and academia.
Quantum technologies harness the unusual features of the quantum world to perform tasks that are difficult with conventional technologies alone.
These courses will cover the full spectrum of this exciting and rapidly developing field – from laser and photonics to quantum information and quantum computing.
A unique aspect of both courses is our placement programme:
As part of our BSc course, you can take up a paid year-long placement in an industry research laboratory or company, gaining valuable industry-relevant experience as part of your degree.
On our MPhys course you will take up a year-long research placement that can be in one of our world-leading research groups, or at one of our partner institutions all over the world.
What you will study
This course combines elements of traditional physics with the study of quantum technologies, just at the time they’re moving on to real-world applications.
You’ll learn about existing quantum technologies, such as the devices used to transmit internet data and those behind the lasers in Blu-ray players.
During your first year, you can switch between any of our specialist physics courses. You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MPhys (Master of Physics), a direct route to a masters qualification. On an MPhys, you’ll spend a year doing research before returning for a final year of masters-level modules.

Physicists are highly sought after in industry, research, education, management, medicine, law and business because of their broad practical skills and advanced scientific knowledge.
In daily life, quantum technologies will enable faster and more secure communications as the price and flexibility of quantum cryptography comes down.
Quantum technologies will even give enhancements to the way that roadworks proceed, by using quantum gravity sensors to identify underground structures and pipelines. All these developments require development scientists and product engineers with an ability to understand the language of quantum physics.
Our degrees will provide you with the analytical, experimental and computational skills valued in a wide variety of careers.
As a Surrey physics student you’ll learn a range of employability skills during your studies. You will take a dedicated Year 1 module – Scientific Investigation Skills – which covers key communication skills, group work and presentations, and problem solving in the laboratory. We also support you with building your CV, interview preparation and job applications.
Students who take either take the Professional Training Year or Research Year also gain invaluable employment experience at their host institution.

Many of our graduates also go on to take masters courses in a range of subjects such as geophysics, nanotechnology, meteorology, quantum field theory, education management and science communication.
Others, particularly those with an MPhys degree, choose to pursue PhDs in astrophysics, materials science, nuclear physics and semiconductors and photonics, among others.

Among British universities, Surrey had the 14th highest average UCAS Tariff for new entrants in 2015. The chancellor of the university is Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. The university conducts extensive research on small satellites, with its Surrey Space Centre and spin-off commercial company, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the University of Surrey received a 5* rating in the categories of "Sociology", "Other Studies and Professions Allied to Medicine", and "Electrical and Electronic Engineering" and a 5* rating in the categories of "Psychology", "Physics", "Applied Mathematics", "Statistics and Operational Research", "European Studies" and "Russian, Slavonic and East European Languages".
The 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey opened in September 2015, for the purpose of research for the development of the first worldwide 5G network. It has gained over £40m support from international telecommunications companies including Aeroflex, MYCOM OSI, BBC, BT Group, EE (telecommunications company), Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe, Huawei, Ofcom, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung, Telefonica and Vodafone – and a further £11.6m from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
In addition, the Surrey Research Park is a 28 ha (69-acre) low density development which is owned and developed by the university, providing large landscaped areas with water features and facilities for over 110 companies engaged in a broad spectrum of research, development and design activities. The university generates the third highest endowment income out of all UK universities "reflecting its commercially-orientated heritage."

However, if you do not meet the direct entry requirements for a course, you can apply to study an International Foundation Year programme at the University of Surrey International Study Centre. Upon successful completion, you can progress to an undergraduate degree at the University of Surrey.

A Levels with 3 subjects with minimum ABB including Science Practical Endorsement are required to pass.
