University's Outdoor Recreation, Parks & Tourism program is the only one of its kind in Canada because of the hands-on approach to learning. University's central location, surrounded by many lakes, diverse environments and natural features, allows us to offer a unique integration of both theoretical and applied perspectives. We are minutes from world-class camping, canoeing, climbing, hiking, fishing, skiing and other recreational resources that are ideal for the practical experience needed to excel within the discipline.

In addition to studying core courses related to recreation pursuits, you will have the opportunity for advanced studies in the areas of parks, tourism or leadership. As a student in the program you will learn:

Social and environmental awareness
Leadership and management skills
Independent critical thinking
Nature-based recreational activities
Risk assessment
Multicultural perspectives on the natural environment

With a strong research focus, the University strive to be leaders in the industry. Many of the courses involve interaction with experts in the field as well as technological elements such as geographic information systems, computer programs and multimedia/video. It is our goal to prepare you for success in this challenging and rapidly changing industry, from planning and leading guided tours to assessing and creating visitor experiences for communities and parks organizations.

NOTE:  Almost all Lakehead University programs are designed with courses that require successful completion of a a Fall session prerequisite course. As a result, students who choose to begin their academic studies in the Winter session will find the course selection extremely limited and will be restricted to attending on a part-time basis until the following Fall academic session.  Most study permits require that the applicant is a full-time student. Because of this, It is recommended that students apply for a September start.

Lakehead University is a public research university with campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ontario, Canada. Lakehead University, shortened to 'Lakehead U', or 'LU', is non-denominational and provincially supported. It has undergraduate programs, graduate programs, the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, the only internationally accredited (AACSB) business school in northern Ontario, and is home to the western campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Lakehead has more than 45,000 alumni. The main campus in Thunder Bay has about 7,900 students. As of September 2006, a new permanent extension campus in Orillia, located about 150 kilometres (93 mi) north of Toronto, has about 1,400 students.

Lakehead University evolved from Lakehead Technical Institute and Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology. Lakehead Technical Institute was established in response to a brief that outlined the need for an institution of higher education in northwestern Ontario. It was established on June 4, 1946, by an Order-in-Council of the Province of Ontario. Classes commenced in January 1948, in temporary rented quarters in downtown Port Arthur. In September of that same year, the first university courses were added to the curriculum.

Lakehead University Student Union, or LUSU, serves as a governing body for student-run clubs. Students can participate in various activities in clubs ranging from student government to multi-cultural and athletics. LUSU is also responsible for publishing the student newspaper, The Argus, as well as running The Study Coffeehouse and The Outpost Pub. These sites serve as gathering places for many campus community activities and as performance venues.
