Become a biomedical scientist helping health professionals diagnose and manage diseases. If you enjoy being practical and have strong analytical skills, study the scientific and laboratory testing of biological samples at degree level
Biomedical scientists carry out laboratory tests on specimens sent for analysis by GPs and other healthcare professionals.
Biomedical Science is vital for the clinical diagnosis of disease and accurate treatment of patients and the operation of the NHS and other health-related industries.
GCU offers the only Biomedical Science programme with placement in Glasgow that is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
You will gain the knowledge and skills needed to become a biomedical scientist, including cellular pathology, clinical biochemistry, haematology, and clinical microbiology. A key strength of the programme is a work-based placement in a Scottish hospital by selection. International students are not eligible for consideration for placement.
Course structure-
Year 1
Chemistry, Cells and Biomolecules, Physiology 1 & 2, Core Skills in Biosciences 1.
Year 2
Introduction to Microbiology, Mechanisms of Cellular Regulation, Core Skills in Biosciences 2, Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, Haematology, Biomedical Science Clinical Skills.
Year 3
Applied Biomedical Science: Molecular Diagnostics, Clinical Microbiology, Systematic and Cellular Pathology, Practice Placement. Biomedical Science: Molecular Diagnostics, Clinical Microbiology, Systematic and Cellular Pathology, Cellular Signalling and Trafficking, Microbial Genomes or Pharmacology of Chemical Mediators, Novel Therapies and Cell Technologies, Experimental Design and Analysis, Option: Biosciences Workplace Experience.
Year 4
Biology of Disease, Bacterial Pathogenicity or (Re)emerging Infections, Advanced Blood Science, Pathophysiology and Therapeutics, Project and Workshop (double module).
